Well, after examining this article, I believe that Mr. Tepperman didn't do the homework on Thailand and its current situation or he just simply wrote something after heavy drinks. Thai economy is going downhill from all bad policies that Yingluck (advisors or her brother) brought to the table to harvest the poor votes. the nation has been losing trillions from the rice mountain scheme.
Yingluck is just a puppet proxy of her brother and she cant even speak Thai peoperly...let alone English......as she "overcome Hillary Clinton" last year before her speech.

The nation is deeply divided like never before and it is waiting to burst.
Instead, you should write about what Thailand should learn from Egypt. May god help Thailand.....

 

 

 

Mr Tepperman your analogy of Egypt and Thailand is completely wrong. There is no comparison between the two countries political troubles. To suggest that Yingluck is responsible for Thailand's success is sheer fantasy

She has never actually taken part in any of the political debates in Parliament preferring to stay away on shopping trips.

She is not a politician has no real idea about any of the problems facing Thailand or how to solve them. Indeed the only problem she is interested in is getting her criminal brother back to Thailand without him having to serve time for the crimes he has committed. 

If you are going to spout nonsense like that I suggest you take up a new career!

As many readers have remarked, this comparison between Thailand and Egypt is ludicrous. Yes, of course, there is a common problem: that of the conflict between democratic sovereignty, on one hand, and the rule of law, respect of the constitution and human rights on the other. But the comparison ends there. Thailand — apart from the troubled south — never was menaced by democratically elected, totalitarian, fascist religious fanaticism. They were menaced by a corrupt, but populist and thus popular politician, who sold the nations interests for his private wealth. On all accounts, Thailand is a far more developed country than Egypt.

The biais this author takes for the Shinawatra gang is quiet outrageous with ridiculous statements such as the yellow shirts representing the "old feodal order", or the "aristocracy", and so on.

After reading the article I came to the conclusion that I live in a different Thailand. Bangkok was not "rocked" by demonstrations. The Internal Security Act and massive police presence combined with countless checkpoints outside Bangkok minimized the number of participants. Quite the opposite to the 2010 red riots, when the "boys in brown" went either AWOL or openly provided muscle at illegal red checkpoints.

Yingluck was chosen by her brother because of her looks, her family ties and her total lack of qualification for the PM job - so she would not embark on solo flights.
Her achievements:
815 people lost their lives in the 2011 flood catastrophe which was made worse by Government incompetence, but she managed to get her brother a passport during that time.
700 bn THB so far lost in the Thaksin Rice Scheme which filled the country's warehouses with rotting rice while the farmers saw very little of the money but were plagued by rising costs.
Government censorship and bullying of social media are at a new height. Police officers openly brag about having secret deals with providers to hand over confidential customer data. .
Members of opposition parties can not campaign in "Red Land" without being physically assaulted or harassed.
Corruption flourishes and takes 30 - 50 Satang of every Baht spent by the Government.
In 2 years Thaksin has reshuffled the Cabinet 4 times to allow everybody to feed at the trough.
The list goes on.

They face a nasty future as farming disappears and older folks lose their land and the safety net of extended families, since the children disappear into low-wage jobs in the cities. Yingluck/Red Shirt policies have bought time at the longer time-expense of the Thai people.

I am surprised that this passed editorial review. You pass off so much of Thailand's recently contested past with such a one-sided bias that it is pointless to address your failures one-by-one. You gloss over deeply entrenched issues as if they have been addressed without issue, contention, or consternation by the opposition or public at large. You ignore the fact that Thailand's economic demise coincided with a global economic slowdown.

I think you should try again and see if you can source your information from someone else next time.
