Confused About Thailand’s Floods? Watch the Blue Whales

Victims of Thailand’s recent floods have complained for weeks that they lack a clear, reliable source of information as government officials issue conflicting reports about the disaster.
So many people are turning to other sources of information — especially a quirky animated video series that has become an online sensation by using lovable blue whales to explain Thailand’s hydrological troubles.
The videos seem to have struck a chord with the public due to their combination of clear, helpful information and a characteristically Thai sense of “sanook,” or fun. The first episode, which illustrates the amount of water yet to drain from areas surrounding Bangkok, had been viewed more than 750,000 times since it was uploaded to YouTube on Oct. 25 as of Tuesday afternoon, while its Facebook page had attracted more than 78,000 “likes.”
The first five-minute video explains how recent heavy rainfall has created an enormous volume of water — the equivalent of the weight of 50 million blue whales, the video says — that has yet to drain south into the Gulf of Thailand.
The smiling, doe-eyed mammals swim around a map of Thailand, showing that their desire to return to the sea is putting pressure on the country’s dikes and canals.
“The only thing we can do right now is to stay calm and focus on how to prepare ourselves for the situation so that we would not be affected so badly,” says a narrator in Thai, speaking calmly over an upbeat electronic music soundtrack. (All of the videos have English subtitles.)
The three other videos in the series use illustrations of citizens with oversized heads — they resemble family-friendly versions of “South Park” characters — to explain ways to calculate potential flooding effects using sea-level measurements and to offer advice on what to do if floodwaters hit. There are also health tips, including instructions on how to avoid contaminated floodwaters and underwater hazards.
The series, called “Roo Su Flood” (literally “know, fight flood”), was organized by 26-year-old Thai filmmaker Kriangkrai Vachiratamtorn. He assembled what he calls the ” Roo Su Flood Group,” which consists of volunteer animators and others with technical skills. Mr. Kriangkrai says the group worked with a Thai public broadcasting channel and flooding experts to ensure accuracy.
Asit Wangsuekul, 26, who helped Mr. Kriangkrai assemble the group, says that their intention was to use the volunteers’ background in mass communications to provide level-headed advice to cut through the disparate messages coming from the TV and the Web. The videos focus on facts, rather than “attitudes,” to “generate calmness,” Mr. Asit said in an email.
Jon Russell, Thailand-based Asia editor at tech blog The Next Web and an expert on social media trends, says that the videos took off because they fill a legitimate need for reliable information. Government authorities have at times said the floods were under control, only to have other officials say they were getting out of control. The videos, by contrast, are no-nonsense and straightforward.
“The floods have affected millions of people and yet precise details of how they started and are progressing remain unknown to many,” he said in an email. The “fun and cute” first episode, especially, has become a “must-watch for almost anyone that lives in or has an interest in the country,” he says.
Mr. Asit says future videos may address topics like post-flood issues and water management, but that additional efforts may require more volunteers if interest wanes after the floods pass.
