Mamasita Fawkes
When Fawkes Is Robbed Of His Voice...
A story of attempts to shush people up on Facebook, a blatant violation of all basic human rights.
When the spoken truth is hunted down, we all live in fear.
"Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth." (Oscar Wilde)
But what if his mouth was duct-taped???
Failed management, degrading economy, ridiculously over-the-top inflating living cost, and to sum it all up, systemic corruptions have led the Thai government under the claimed leadership of Yingluck Shinawatra who has run the country with her brother master puppeteer behind the scene [1] down the hill.
With the passing of multiple questionable legislative proposals that accelerates the fury and anger to likely burst into a turmoil, recent protest developments have sparked over the internet and social media. "Thai Spring" is one of the many developing example channels for the people to express their disagreeing opinions on Yingluck Shinawatra's recent partial truth (some called it a total bogus) delivered at the Conference of the Community of Democracies, held in Ulaanbaatar [2]. As of May 28th, 2013, over 25,000 Thai citizens have signed this petition. Another movement in progress is the campaign to change of their Facebook profile image to the white mask of V the Vendetta. The white mask of Guy (Guido) Fawkes has been used to symbolize the disagreement (to put it mildly) in how Yingluck Shinawatra runs the country [3].
However sadly it is though, the ruling under the Shinawatra's regime has always been allegedly recognized for shutting up the people who disagree with them ever since her brother, Thaksin Shinawatra came into power almost a decade ago.
And it is definitely happening again now that more and more Thai people are expressing their opinion via the social media.
It is also looking like changing the profile picture to a widely publicly available image of the mask is becoming a crime in Thailand.
The spokesperson of Pheu Thai (the ruling party), Prompong Nopparit has threatened to hunt down individuals who express their disagreement and take "legal action" upon these individuals. And instead of accepting the different point of view which is the heart of democracy, the spokesperson may have added to the already-very-angry people's fury by calling them "mentally disturbed people" [4]. This has also been cited by the Huffington Post [5]. The news has been featured in Asian News Network [6].
The saddest of all is that too many individuals who have previously changed their profile picture are now being asked by their family members to withdraw themselves from the campaign for the fear that the ruling power may put him/her and the family in danger, lawfully or not (again, the Shinawatra's regime has also been alleged for adjusting the laws to right the wrong [7]).
The Thai people are being robbed of two of the four freedoms unjustly - the freedom of speech, and most importantly, the freedom from fear.
Thai, or not, it is the world community's responsibility to help protect these rights and freedoms. I urge you to join this campaign by changing your profile picture or posting the picture of this symbol of the white mask on any social media. Be it Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or whatsoever, we all need to take this duct tape off of the mask.
