NUSA DUA, Indonesia (Kyodo) -- Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda asked Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Friday to help facilitate the early resumption of operations of Japanese firms affected by the massive flooding in Thailand, a Japanese official said.
During their 30-minute meeting on the sidelines of regional summits on the Indonesian resort island of Bali, Noda was quoted as telling Yingluck that the "early recovery of Japanese firms is extremely crucial for Thailand's economic rebuilding," referring to how the floods have caused supply chain disruptions.

In response to Noda's request for the Thai government to make it smoother for firms to restart operations such as import of necessary equipment, Yingluck said her country will support Japan through measures such as exemption of the equipment from customs duties, the official said.

Aiming to restore investor confidence in Bangkok, Yingluck proposed that both countries' foreign ministers work together to draw up a plan for reconstruction of flood-hit Thailand, the official said.

Noda and Yingluck also reaffirmed their cooperation in facing challenges such as disaster management in the region, the official said.

Aside from Thailand, several Southeast Asian nations are prone to natural calamities such as typhoons and floods.
Japan has so far extended to Thailand grant aid and relief supplies, sent experts to survey flood damage, and allowed Thai employees of Japanese companies based in Thailand to work temporarily in Japan under a special arrangement to help firms whose local plants have been inundated.

Obama hails Thai PM's 'inspirational' election win

US President Barack Obama on Saturday warmly congratulated Thailand's recently elected novice prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra on her "inspirational" victory at the ballot box.


Thailand, a longstanding US ally, has been riven by political divisions that culminated in mass Bangkok protests last year, with more than 90 people killed in clashes between the army and supporters of Yingluck's brother Thaksin.

Thaksin was ousted in a 2006 coup but Yingluck, who Thaksin once described as his "clone", was named prime minister after her Puea Thai party won a general election in July.

At a meeting on the sidelines of the East Asia Summit on the Indonesian island of Bali, Obama said he wanted to "extend congratulations to the prime minister" for an "inspirational election".

Since coming to power Yingluck has been sorely tested by Thailand's worst flooding in decades which have left around 600 people dead and outer parts of the capital Bangkok inundated.

"We will extend any assistance we can," said Obama."The US and Thailand are two of the oldest allies, with great friendship. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the victims of the flood."

Yingluck thanked Obama for his co-operation.

Obama meets Thai prime minister on last leg of Asia-Pacific trip

Bali, Indonesia (CNN) -- U.S. President Barack Obama met with the Thai prime minister Saturday as he wrapped up his nine-day trip through the Asia-Pacific region.

The bilateral talks with Yingluck Shinawatra, elected Thailand's first woman prime minister in July, were Obama's last stop before departing for home.

Obama congratulated Shinawatra on her "inspirational" election win, and offered condolences and assistance to those affected by the flooding in Thailand.

He also described Thailand as one of America's oldest allies and spoke of the two nations' great friendship. When Shinawatra expressed her regret at not having visited the United States, Obama responded by inviting her to Hawaii.

The meeting came a day after Obama took part in the East Asia Summit in Indonesia, a first for a U.S. president, according to the White House.

While there, he met Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao and held bilateral talks with the leaders of India, Malaysia and the Philippines, as well as his Indonesian counterpart, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

The summit serves as a forum for the region -- which accounts for more than half of the world's gross domestic product -- to create dialogue on issues relating to politics, security and the economy.

As part of their talks Friday, Yudhoyono and Obama announced a $600 million deal "to support environmentally sustainable economic development through clean energy projects and sustainable landscapes projects, community-based nutrition programs and procurement modernization," according to the White House.

The leaders also reaffirmed their partnership and "commitment to strengthen democracy and human rights in their own societies."
Earlier Friday, Obama took part in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations economic summit and hailed an airplane sales deal between Boeing and an Indonesian airline.

He also attended a gala dinner for East Asian leaders Friday wearing a traditional Indonesian shirt.

Meanwhile, leaders at the summit agreed that Myanmar can chair the regional bloc in 2014, amid some signs of reform. Some critics say it is still too early to award the high-profile role to Myanmar, where 600 to 1,000 political prisoners are believed to remain behind bars.
Coinciding with the agreement, Obama announced that U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton plans to visit Myanmar next month on a trip that could signal a major change in relations between the two countries. Obama made the announcement after talking with pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi by phone.

U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said he plans to go to Myanmar "as soon as possible" and pledged to help the nation.
"The United Nations will continue to engage, first of all help them to promote national reconciliation," Ban said. "We will help them to have harmonious relationship with regional countries and I will continue to discuss this matter with the Group of Friends on Myanmar."
